What are LED Channel Letter Signs?

Channel letters are a staple when planning for your exterior signage. If you’ve gone to the grocery store recently or visited a shopping center, you’ve most likely seen an LED channel letter sign. A channel letter sign is a three-dimensional graphic element made with aluminum sheeting, acrylic plastic, and, in this case, separate LED illumination. Each letter, number, or character is easily customizable with a wide array of fonts and colors to choose from, making branding for your business simpler than ever.

LED Channel Letter Components

 

  • Channel or Return: This is the side portion or “bulk” of your channel letter. The channel, or return, is made of aluminum and is responsible for providing depth to each letter. 
  • Face: Typically made of acrylic or aluminum, depending on the lighting style of your sign.  
  • Trim Cap: Plastic or metal strip used to fasten the face of the sign to the channel or return. 
  • Backing: Typically made of acrylic or aluminum, depending on the lighting style of your sign.
  • Lighting Source: LED lighting is used to provide a bright, long-lasting glow.

LED Channel Letter Lighting Options

Front-Lit (Standard Lit)

Front-lit channel letters are most commonly used in signs. LED lights are installed on the back panel and shine through acrylic facing.

Reverse-Lit

Reverse-lit channel letters allow light to shine through the back of the sign, producing a glowing effect around each letter. LED lights are still installed on the back panel, however, the face is made of aluminum, allowing light to bounce off towards the back.

Simultaneous Glow

By installing an aluminum divider in each channel letter, LED lights are installed on both the front and back of the sign interior. This produces a simultaneous front and back-facing glow.

Open Face

Using a clear acrylic facing on each sign, open face lighting allows customers to see the lighting within the signage.

Individually Mounted

Each letter is individually attached directly to the wall. Their electrical components are secured to the building they’re mounted on.

Raceway Mounted

Each channel letter is placed onto a mounting strip called a “raceway” that also serves to enclose electrical components.
